Group C is the one to watch: two champions, seven titles, one group
The draw on 19 May 2026 placed 48 teams into twelve groups of four. One of those groups stands out, and it is not the one containing the highest-ranked team.
Group C holds Ivory Coast and Ghana. Ivory Coast are ranked 31st in the world with three continental titles, the most recent in 2023. Ghana are 65th with four, though the last of those came in 1982. Seven titles in one group of four, and they meet on the opening matchday.
Why the highest-ranked team does not make the hardest group
Group A contains Morocco, the reigning champions and the best-ranked side in Africa at sixth in the world. It also contains Gabon (84th), Niger (114th) and Lesotho (146th). Adding up those four positions gives the lowest total of any group, which would make it the "strongest" group on that measure.
For Morocco it is nothing of the sort. The nearest challenger is 78 ranking places behind. A single strong team does not create a difficult group; two strong teams in the same group do.
That distinction matters because difficulty is not really a property of a group at all. Group A is a straightforward assignment for Morocco and a punishing one for Lesotho. The same four teams produce four different answers depending on who is asking.
What we show instead
Rather than compress a group into one number, we list two things you can check by eye on the qualifiers page: how many former champions were drawn into it, and how many ranking places separate the two leading sides. Group C scores two former champions and a gap of 34. Group A scores one and a gap of 78. The tables say which is the real contest without anyone having to trust a formula.
One caveat on the numbers. Every FIFA position here comes from the release of 20 July 2026, with the next update due on 7 October. The seeding pots for this draw were built on the April 2026 ranking, so the order of teams within a group will not match today's positions. That is not an error in the data.
