AFCON 2027 expands to 28 teams, and leaves one big question open
CAF confirmed on 22 July 2026 that the 2027 finals will be contested by 28 teams rather than 24, arranged in seven groups of four. The tournament runs from 19 June to 17 July 2027 across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, the first edition ever staged by three countries.
The expansion itself is straightforward. What follows from it is not.
The old arithmetic no longer works
Until this announcement, the path to the finals was easy to describe. Forty-eight teams were drawn into twelve groups of four. Two went through from each group, except in the three groups containing a host nation, where only the best side other than the host advanced. Nine groups sending two, three groups sending one, plus the three hosts, came to exactly 24.
Four more places break that sum, and CAF has not said how they will be filled. Adding a third qualifier in some groups, introducing a play-off round, or ranking the best runners-up across groups would each produce 28, and each would change what a given result is worth. Until the mechanism is published, nobody can honestly tell a supporter what their team needs from its six matches.
This matters for reading anything written about the qualifiers. Pages produced before 22 July describe a 24-team tournament, and many have not been updated. Pages that confidently state how many teams go through from a qualifying group are describing a rule that no longer exists.
What is settled
The qualifying draw held in Cairo on 19 May 2026 stands. Forty-eight teams, twelve groups, 144 matches across three international windows: 21 September to 6 October 2026, 9 to 17 November 2026, and 22 to 30 March 2027. The three hosts are through automatically and play their group matches without anything riding on them.
Everything else about the finals remains open. CAF has not confirmed a single stadium or host city, has not named the venue for the opening match or the final, and has not set a date or place for the final draw beyond an expectation of March 2027.
We have left the qualification numbers blank on every group page rather than guess. When CAF publishes the mechanism, those pages will fill in.
